Who we are
DetroPick ("DetroPick," "we," "us") publishes independent skincare product reviews at detropick.vercel.app. This policy explains what happens to information connected to you when you read a review, sign up for our newsletter, or send us a message — and it applies to this website only, not to the retailers or social platforms we link out to.
Information you provide directly
We collect information when you choose to give it to us:
- Contact form. Your name, email address, and message, so we can reply to you. Submitted messages are stored and, where our email delivery provider is available, forwarded to our inbox as a notification.
- Newsletter sign-up. Just an email address, added to our subscriber list so we can send you updates. You can unsubscribe at any time — see "Your choices" below.
We don't ask for payment details, government identification, or any other sensitive information through this site, and we ask that you not include any in a contact form message.
Information collected automatically
To understand which reviews are useful and which product recommendations people act on, our own code (not a third-party tracker) logs a small set of events as you browse: which pages you view, which product cards or "View on Amazon" buttons you click, and — where a review includes video — whether you start, pause, or finish it. Each browser is assigned a random ID stored in that browser's local storage purely so a returning visit isn't miscounted as a second new visitor; it isn't tied to your name or email unless you separately give those to us through a form.
We also briefly log the IP address behind a request at the server level, mainly to rate-limit abusive traffic and keep the site's counters accurate. This isn't cross-referenced with your browsing activity or kept as a standing profile.
Cookies & local storage
DetroPick's own systems don't set tracking cookies. The one piece of data we store in your browser is the anonymous visitor ID described above, kept in local storage rather than a cookie, and used only for visit counting. If you have Google Analytics enabled in your browser's privacy settings, that separate, optional service may set its own cookies — see the next section.
Analytics tools
Depending on our current configuration, this site may load one or both of the following, in addition to our own first-party counters:
- Vercel Web Analytics — aggregated traffic statistics (pages, referrers, device type) from our hosting provider, Vercel.
- Google Analytics 4 — a broader browsing picture (sessions, traffic sources, device and location data at a general level), which is only active when we've configured a measurement ID for it.
Both are operated by their respective companies under their own privacy policies, which we'd encourage you to review directly if you want the full technical detail on what they collect: Vercel's privacy policy and Google's privacy policy.
Affiliate links
DetroPick participates in the Amazon Associates program. Many "View on Amazon" and similar buttons on our reviews are affiliate links — if you buy something after clicking one, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Once you leave DetroPick through one of these links, you're on Amazon's site, governed by Amazon's own privacy policy, and any information you provide there (account details, payment information, shipping address) is handled by Amazon, not us. We don't receive your personal purchase details from Amazon — only aggregate reporting on link performance.
Advertising
Any promotional banners you see on DetroPick are configured directly by us through our own admin tools, not served by a third-party ad exchange. They don't carry their own separate tracking pixels beyond the click counting described above under "Information collected automatically."
How we use this information
- To respond to messages sent through our contact form.
- To send newsletter updates to subscribers who asked for them.
- To understand which reviews and products are actually helpful, so we can prioritize what to cover next.
- To keep the site secure and prevent abuse of our forms and public endpoints.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not use anything you send us to build advertising profiles.
Who we share data with
We rely on a small number of service providers to run the site, and information may pass through their systems as a result:
- Vercel — hosting and the database that stores contact messages and newsletter subscribers.
- Resend — delivers the email notification when a contact form is submitted.
These providers process data on our behalf under their own security commitments; we don't authorize them to use it for their own purposes. Outside of them, we share information only if required to comply with a legal obligation, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of DetroPick and our visitors.
Retention & security
Contact messages and newsletter subscriptions are kept for as long as needed to respond to you or to keep sending the newsletter you signed up for, and are removed on request (see "Your choices"). Aggregated traffic counters are retained for roughly a year to support year-over-year comparisons, after which older daily figures age out automatically. We take reasonable technical precautions to protect the data we hold, but no online service can guarantee absolute security.
Your choices
- Unsubscribe. Every newsletter email includes an unsubscribe option, or you can email us directly and we'll remove you.
- Access or deletion. Email us at the address below to ask what information we hold about you, or to have your contact message or newsletter subscription deleted.
- Browser controls. You can clear local storage or block third-party analytics scripts through your browser's own privacy settings at any time; doing so won't affect your ability to read reviews on DetroPick.
Children's privacy
DetroPick is intended for a general adult audience and isn't directed at children. We don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has submitted information to us, contact us and we'll remove it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this page as the site or the tools behind it change. The "Effective date" above reflects the most recent revision; meaningful changes will be reflected here rather than announced separately, so it's worth checking back occasionally.
